The Players of The Game

There are no rules for creating personas in Lonesome October. No restrictions on what type of person that can be played. This game is not won and lost by physical power. A Cyborg from the future has an equal chance of winning as an inept rabbit hunter. For ‘The Game’ all that is needed to win is intellectual ability and the ability to interact with other Players.
In order to create a persona simply describe him, her or it to the Administrator. If the Admin agrees, the next step is to determine the objective of the persona, Opener, Closer, or Non-Player.

Openers

These personas seek “a glorious new world” that will come to pass when the Elder Gods once again roam the earth. They seek to open the Gateway and will build Structures of power to that extent. The assumption is that the Gods will be grateful to the people who assist in their return, and grant them immense powers.

For example: Jim is playing a creature spawned in the depths of a dark lagoon. His persona is currently shunned by all people, but he feels once the Gateway has been opened he will become the ruler of all men. Jim’s persona is, obviously, an Opener.

Closers

These personas seek to maintain the current world and prevent the coming of the Elder Gods. Their objective is to ensure that the Gateway remains closed and their efforts and Structures of power are aimed to prevent the Openers from succeeding.

For example: Jill is playing a humanoid alien from a far away planet, that disguises himself as a “mild manner reporter.” Her persona feels that opening the Gateway will lead to the deaths of millions of people. To prevent that, Jill’s persona is a Closer.

Non-Player

These personas are essentially not in The Game. They are in the area for whatever reason, and usually find themselves embroiled in the activities of the Players against their wishes.

For example: John is playing a “bigtime movie producer” who is in the area researching for a movie. He has no idea about the Game and will get himself underfoot of the Players trying to figure out what is occurring.

Changing Objectives

It is quite likely that in the course of the month of October, one or more of the personas are likely to change their goals. This can be the result of a number of reasons: a Non-Player joining the game or a Player discovering “the error of his ways.” All that happens in this situation is that all of that Player’s activities in the past are aimed at his new goal. (Exception: the Wand of Opening will always count toward the opening of the Gateway, and the Wand of Closing will always count against.) A Player does not need to recreate his Structure of Power, and can still add to it.
