Familiars

All Players have some assistance in reaching their goals. They each have once animal companion that can help perform actions for the Player. These creatures are known as Familiars. Each Player has a unique familiar that is described to the Administrator at the beginning of the game. If two people describe the same animal, the Administrator will ask one, or both, are changed.
The only person that a familiar can communicate with is their owner. They can only do this, however, between midnight and 1:00 a.m. each night. During that time they can describe things that the have seen and conversations they may have overheard. At any other time they cannot speak to their owners, but they can still understand him perfectly. Familiars can also communicate with other animals, and other familiars.

Telling and relevant quote from the book here.

What familiars can do

Familiars are very useful in information gathering, protection and similar tasks. Players let the admin know what they want their familiars to do, and the admin lets them know the results.

I don’t yet know how they will play into the game, this is something we can work out together.

Ken lets the Admin know that his familiar (a fox) is charged with finding the residences of the other players. After a few days the Admin provides him with a couple.

Joe sets his familiar (a worm) to guarding his residence. Although an ineffective physical guardian, the admin rules that the worm increases Joe’s player’s defense against scrying, as well as providing him with information about the players and familiars that have been around.

Rachel tells the Admin that her spider is tasked with spreading misinformation. Admin lets her know that the spider has led a fox to an incorrect residence and tricked a worm into believing that a squirrel is another familiar.

What familiars can't do

Familiars cannot gather ingredients. Familiars cannot communicate with other players. Familiars are loathe to kill other familiars and cannot harm other players. And I’m sure I’ll shoot down other things you try to get them to do too.

Role-playing familiars

Familiars will not be role-played in this game; this is the biggest way I am differing from the book. As the examples above demonstrate, a players will let the Admin know what their familiars are doing in a general sense, and the Admin will let them know the results.
